Departure from Nice or Cannes by highway to reach the perched village of St Paul. 30 mn from Nice or 45 mn from Cannes.
St Paul is a medieval village with a rich history which was fortified by Francis the I, King of France.
Many painters such as Chagall, Miro, Picasso, Matisse gave this village a special reputation since the 1920’s.
In the 1950’s it also attracted movie stars such as Yves Montand, Simone Signoret, Brigitte Bardot …
Special parking with a fee and toilets available.Walk up to the village in 10 mn, and stroll the main streets paved with cobbled stones.
Visit the Romanesque church and the fountain square. At the end of the main street, find the cemetery where Marc Chagall is burried.
Free time and discovery of the art galleries.
From the village, it is possible to walk to the Foundation Maeght (15 mn).
The visit of the Maeght Foundation, meeting place of artists and art lovers, offers a unique opportunity on the French Riviera to get a synthetic vision of modern and contemporary art.
Situated in an exceptional setting, it is a museum in a park. Visit the gardens with sculptures by Calder, Giacometti, Miro etc…then walk into the museum to discover the permanent collection, works of major artists of the middle 20th century such as Miro, Chagall, Leger and many others.
Every year during the summer, the Maeght Foundation organizes a temporary exhibit dedicated to an artist or on a specific theme.
The Maeght Foundation is situated in the countryside of Saint Paul, which is one of the most visited villages of France. It is still surrounded with walls dating back to the 16th century and a visit to this former border town is always a fascinating experience. The visitors enjoy strolling through its narrow streets lined with art galleries and artisan workshops.
The bus will meet us for return at the foot of the Foundation Maeght above the main parking area.
Return to Nice or Cannes.
